Winter day / Journee d’hiver

Today was the perfect winter day, sunny, not too cold, no wind. So we decided to go for a walk.

I took the GPS with me and along the way we did a few geocaches (found 2).

We even ventured on a small trail that had been used by people with snowshoes not so long ago. We didn’t have much problems walking around.

All that to say that we had a good afternoon in the big outdoors.

Aujourd’hui, c’était la journée d’hiver idéale, ensoleillée, pas trop froid et pas de vent. On a donc décidé d’aller se promener un peu.

J’ai pris le GPS avec moi et sur le chemin on a fait un peu de geocaching (trouvé 2).

Nous avons pris un petit sentier dans le bois qui avait été utilisé par des gens en raquettes. On a meme pas eu de probleme a marcher.

Tout ça pour dire que nous avons eu un bon après-midi dans le grand air.

More Geocaching / Encore du Geocaching

When I woke up this morning the weather wasn’t that great, snow and blowing snow. There was a winter storm warning on the weather network. I went to the store first thing as I needed a few cables for the television. At the same time I picked up some good gloves as yesterday Lucie and I froze our hands while geocaching.

That was the only excuse I needed to get out in a snow storm. I told Lucie that we had to go out and test our new gloves. Besides, yesterday Lucie posted on the internet that I was the one crazy to get out in this kind of winter temperature and that she was only following.  If I am going to be blamed, might as well be for something.

So we went in the falling snow and windy conditions. Guess what?  We found 3 more geocaches and didn’t even got cold, not even the fingers…

All jokes aside we had a good time and the only other people out were people on snowmobiles.

Lorsque je me suis réveillé ce matin, la temperature etait pas vargeuse, de la neige et de la poudrerie. Il y avait meme un avertissement de tempête de neige sur le réseau météorologique. La premiere chose que j’ai fait a ete d’aller au magasin car j’avais besoin de quelques câbles pour la télévision. En même temps, j’ai acheté des gants, parce qu’hier, Lucie et moi on s’est gelé les mains pendant qu’on cherchait des geocaches.

Ca a ete la seule excuse que j’avais besoin pour sortir dans une tempête de neige. J’ai dit à Lucie qu’on avait besoin de sortir pour tester nos nouveaux gants. En plus, hier Lucie a ete posté sur Internet que j’étais le fou à sortir  dans ces temperatures d’hiver pour faire du Geocaching et qu’elle, elle ne faisait que suivre.  Si je vais être blâmé pour quelque chose et bien au moins ca va etre pour une raison.

On est donc parti affronter le blizzard et la tempete. Devinez quoi?  On a trouvé 3 géocaches et en plus on a meme pas eu froid, même pas les doigts …

Farce a part, on a eu du fun et les seules autres personnes as part nous qui etaient dehors etaient en motoneige.

New Year and Geocaching / Nouvelle Annee et Geocaching

First of all, Happy New Year everyone, hope all your dreams will come true in 2010.

We had a good holiday season. As in the past Santa Claus was very good with the children (even if they hung him on the lamp)and with us for that matter.

And we ate a lot more than we should have.

We got few new family photos at the same time, it is not everyday that everyone is well dressed so we took advantage of it.

We had the chance to do a little bit of Geocaching. We went for a walk with Loki and found a few.

The day ended up with a snow ball fight. All that took all the energy from Loki who dropped when we returned home.

Along the way we took some nice photos.

Vincent is gone to Newfoundland to celebrate the new year with his friends.

Just before Boxing Day, Lucie’s computer crashed. We ended up going to the store, it was madness, but we were able to get through with a little shoulder and elbows. Since that time Lucie is trying to get all of her softwares back on the new one. I am hearing lot of swearing lately…

Today to start the new year on a good note, we went geocaching again and hunting for covered bridge. We found both of them…. Today was rather cold and windy for geocaching but that didn’t stop us. I would have like to start the new year kayaking, but it is way too cold and besides everything is frozen solid.

Tout d’abord, une tres bonne et heureuse année à tous, en esperant que tout vos rêves se realisent en 2010.

On a eu de bonnes vacances des fetes. Comme d’habitude, le Pere Noel as ete tres genereux avec les enfants (même s’ils l’ont pendu sur la lampe), nous aussi on a ete gaté d’ailleurs.

Et bien sur on a mange bien plus qu’on aurait du…

On en a profité pour prendre quelques photos de famille, c’est pas tout les jours que tout le monde est habillé propre, faqu’on en a profité.

On a eu la chance de faire un peu de Géocaching. On est allé se promener avec Loki et on en a trouver quelques-unes.

On a fini la journee avec une bataille de boules de neige. Tout ca a dépensé toute l’energie de Loki, il s’est écrasé sur le fauteuil en arrivant a la maison.

Aujourd’hui pour commencer la nouvelle année en beaute, on est alle faire du geocaching et a la recherche de ponts couverts. On a trouve les deux…. c’etait un peu froid et venteux pour faire du Geocaching mais cela nous a pas empeché d’y aller. J’aurais aime commencer l’annee en kayak, mais c’est pas mal trop froid et de toute facon tout est gelé.

Vacation 2 / Vacances 2

Vincent and I went to do a Geocache in Rocky Harbour. This one was on top of a big hill. We had quite a workout going up. We searched around and never found the cache. Then we went back down and again had quite a workout.

2009-07-15

It was grocery day in Corner Brook. On the way in and back from doing the grocery I managed to find more Geocaches, 7 more finds.

2009-07-17/18/19

Alain, Kim and I all went camping on the Northern Peninsula. We went to the same campground as last year. In the 2 days we were there, we had wind, rain and it was cold. Some of the highlights of the trip were: we saw some icebergs

and did some Geocaching again. One of the cache was located on a big hill in the town of St Anthony. 

As Alain mentionned several times, there was 476 steps to the top,but it was worthwhile, what a view.

Another Geocache we did took us close to a shipwreck. It was quite a drive to get there but again it was quite worthwhile to see.

After these adventures we ended up at the same restaurant as last year. One of the reason is that they served fried ice cream and the idea of going to St Anthony was to treat ourselves to that. We had a big meal and some real nice desert.

During the evening back at the camp site we had a nice camp fire. 

Then we did some experiments which involved flashlights, glow sticks, sparklers and a camera. The results of all that was nice and we had lot of fun.

The last night was cold and wet, rain all night. In the morning we had to pack all our things wet. We drove directly home as the weather was not cooperating for Geocaching.

While in St Anthony we picked up a travel bug. It is an object that you find in Geocaches and that is moved from cache to cache.

2009-07-20

I did some maintenance on my own Geocaches to see if everything was in order, and all was well. At the same time I dropped the travel bug in one of my caches.

Alain and I went once again Geocaching all day. We found 5 Geocaches and once more had lots of fun. I made my own Travel Bugs that we dropped in different caches that day. I am curious to see how far will they travel.

We all went to see Lucie at work and at the same time did the boat tour.

She is doing an excellent job. We had a good time, not sure if Lucie did too as she was working but it looks like she was enjoying herself.

And for the rest of the vacation I took it relax.

Vincent et moi on est alle pour chercher une Geocache a Rocky Harbour. Celle-la etait en haut d’une grosse colline. On a travaille fort pour aller jusqu’en haut. On a cherche et cherche mais malheureusement on ne l’a pas trouvee. En fin de compte ca a ete une bonne sceance d’entrainement.

J’ai ete faire l’epicerie a Corner Brook. Sur le chemin du retour, je me suis amuse a chercher des Geocaches, 7 nouvelles decouvertes.

2009-07-17/18/19

Alain, Kim et moi on a ete faire du camping en haut de la peninsule du Nord. (Northern Peninsula) On est alle au meme endroit que l’annee passee. Durant les 2 jours qu’on etait la, on a eu du vent, de la pluie et il faisait froid. Les points saillants du voyage: On a vu des icebergs

et on a fait du Geocaching. Un des caches était situee sur un grosse colline dans la ville de St Anthony.

Alain a mentionne plusieurs fois qu’il y avait 476 marches pour aller en haut. Mais ça valait vraiment la peine, quel point de vue.

Une autre geocache que nous avons trouve etait tout pret d’une epave de bateau. Il a fallu conduire pas mal pour y arriver mais la encore ca valait la peine.

Apres toutes ces aventures on est retourne dans le meme restaurant que l’an dernier. Une des raisons principales c’est qu’ils ont de la creme glace frite. C’etait une des raisons pour aller a St Anthony. On a eu un bon repas et un vraiment bon dessert.

Dans la soiree on est retourne au terrain de camping et on s’est fait un feu de camp.

En meme temps on a fait quelques experiences avec des lampes de poche, des batons lumineux et une camera. Les resultats etait pas pire pantoutte et en plus on a eu bien du fun.

La derniere nuit a ete froide et humide, on a eu de la pluie toute la nuit. Dans la matinee, on a ppaquetter nos affaires toutes mouillees et on est parti directement a la maison. La temperature n’a pas voulu cooperer pour le Geocaching.

Durant le voyage a St Anthony on a trouve une “travel Bug” Il s’agit d’un objet qu’on trouve dans les geocaches et qu’on doit deplacer de cache en cache.

J’ai ete verifier toutes mes geocaches et en ai fait l’entretien un peu, pour voir si tout est en ordre. En meme temps, j’ai laisse le “travel bug” que l’on avait pris a St Anthony dans une de mes caches.

Alain et moi on a passe la journee a faire du Geocaching. On a trouve 5 geocaches et on a eu beacoup de plaisir. J’ai meme fait mes propres “travel Bug” et on les a laisse dans differentes caches durant la journee. Je suis bien curieux de voir le chemin qu’elles vont faire.

Et bien on a tous ete voir Lucie a son travail et en meme temps on a fait le tour de bateau.

Elle est pas mal bonne. La encore on a eu beaucoup de plaisir et je pense que Lucie aussi, en tout cas elle avait l’air de pas mal avoir du fun.

Et pour le reste des vacances, j’ai pris ca relax.

It is not easy to write a blog while on vacation.  Most people would think it’s the other way around, I am just too busy and can’t find the time to write.  Here are the highlights of my vacation so far:

2009-07-01 / 05
I went to Montreal to pick up a car for Vincent.  I got a good deal from one of my brother-in-law.  I flew to Montreal, stayed overnight, next morning I got all the paperwork in order for the car and then drove to my sister and mother in Quebec city.  I spend 2 days in Quebec city.  Some of the things I have done that are worth mentionning are:

I went to see a movie at the IMAX theater.   U2 in IMAX and 3D, I was a little skeptical about the 3D part but I had a real good time and enjoyed the experience.  I would recommend this even to people who are not U2 fans.

I initiated my sister to the fun of Geocaching.  We found 3 Geocaches while I was there.  From what I can see I will have new things to chat about with my sister.  I think she really got hooked.

I did lot of shopping around Quebec city and took advantage got to practice my french a little.

But the most important thing is that I spend some time with my mother and my sister and caught up with all the news.

Then I left at 06:00am and drove to Nova Scotia to catch the ferry. I arrived 14 hrs later at 08:00pm.  1236km later.  The travel to Newfoundland was no problems.  I arrived in Port aux Basques the next morning at 09:00.  As I was in no hurry,  I looked for more Geocaches on the way back, found 5 new ones under the pouring rain.  I arrived home at 03:30pm, 361km later.  For a total of 1989 km in 3 days.

Good way to test a new car.  Vincent is quite happy to have his own wheels now.

2009-07-09
A few days later I went to Corner Brook with Alain and Kim.  We had decided that other than the shopping we needed to do, we were going to make it a geocaching day.  We did just that…  We broke several of our own records.  First we had 2 FTF (first to find) which is not all that common in Geocaching.  Second we found our 100th cache during that day.  Finally we found 12 that day, breaking our personal record of 11 finds in a day.  So it was a really good geocaching day.

While doing all these geocaches we noticed that some people had left their geocaching business cards in the containers.  We liked the idea so much that while in Corner Brook we had some made as well.  The children decided what was going to be on the cards and they are quite pleased with the results.

2009-07-11
There was one Geocache in the Port Saunders/Port au Choix area that I didn’t do last time we were there.  The cache is set up by Parks Canada and it is a mystery one, the kind we need to solve puzzles to get it.  That is all we needed, we left early (Alain, Kim and I as Vincent and Lucie were working), Port au Choix is about a 2hrs drive from here.  The Geocache consisted of going around the Park and getting answers to questions on information display.  We got the 5 answers, which involved some driving around, some trail walking and of course the promise of ice cream.  The kids had a real good time.

On the way back we stopped at the Salmon Interpretation center in Hawks Bay and we had a look a some salmon swimming in the river via an underground window.

2009-07-12
I left the kids home, they wanted a rest from my vacation and I went by myself and found some more Geocaches.  I got 2 first to find and 4 more in the Pasadena area.

2009-07-13
More Geocaching, this time we went to Howleys to find 2 geocaches.  This was my first time in Howley and we found the Geocache no problems, just before the rain.

So all that to say that the main theme for this vacation is Geocaching as I can go kayaking yet.  I added a new page to the Blog called Geocache Stats.  You can have a look, it just gives you all kind of personal statistics about my finds.

Today I am not sure what I will be doing as Lucie is not working.  Tomorrow is grocery time in Corner Brook, I am quite sure that I will find more Geocache on the way there.

C’est pas facile d’ecrire un blog pendant les vacances. La plupart du monde pourrait penser que c’est le contraire, et bien non, je suis trop occuppe pour avoir le temps d’écrire. Voici un compte rendu de ce qu’on a fait jusqu’a date:

2009-07-01 / 05
J’ai ete a Montreal pour aller chercher une voiture pour Vincent. J’ai eu une bonne aubaine d’un de mes beaux-freres. Je suis parti en avion et j’ai juste passe une nuit a Montreal.  Le lendemain matin apres avoir fait toute la paperasse pour la voiture,  je suis parti pour Quebec.  J’ai directement ete chez ma soeur et ma mere a Quebec ou j’ai passe 2 jours.   Voila en gros ce que jèai fait durant mon sejour dans la ville de Quebec:

Je suis alle voir un film au cinéma IMAX. U2 en IMAX et 3D.  J’etais un peu sceptique au sujet du 3D, mais ca a vraiment valu la peine. Je le recommanderais meme a ceux qui ne sont pas fans de U2.

J’ai initie ma soeur aux joies du Geocaching. On a trouve 3 caches durant ma visite. Ca va me donner un nouveau sujet de discussion avec ma soeur.  Je pense qu’elle est vraiment mordue.

J’ai fait beaucoup de magasinage et j’en ai profite pour pratiquer mon francais un peu.

Mais bien sure la chose la plus importante a ete de passer un peu de temps avec ma soeur et ma mere et de rattrapper un peu le temps perdu.

Apres 2 jours, Je suis parti à 06h00 et j’ai conduit directement au traversier en Nouvelle-Ecosse. Je suis arrive 14 heures plus tard. Apres 1236 km de route. Le voyage a Terre-Neuve en traversier a bien ete. Je suis arrivé a Port-aux-Basques le lendemain matin a 09:00. Comme j’étais pas presse, j’ai cherche d’autres Geocaches sur le chemin du retour.  J’en ai trouve 5 autres sous la pluie battante. Je suis arrive a la maison à 03:30 h, 361 km plus tard. Pour un total de 1989 km en 3 jours.

En fin de compte c’est un bon moyen pour tester une nouvelle voiture. Vincent est tres content d’avoir son propre vehicule maintenant.

2009-07-09
Quelques jours plus tard on est alle a Corner Brook, Alain, Kim et moi. On avait quelques achats a faire et on s’est dit qu’en meme temps on pourrait faire un peu de Geocaching et d’en faire le but principal de la journee.  Et bien c’est ca qu’on a fait…  On a brise quelques uns de mes records. Tout d’abord, on a eu 2 FTF (first to find / premiers a trouver), ce qui n’est pas si facile que ca a faire. Ensuite on a trouve notre 100eme cache durant la journee. Et pour finir on a trouve 12 caches dans la journee ce qui as battu notre record de 11 podans la meme journee.  Donc une tres bonne journee a faire du Geocaching.

Plusieur fois durant la journee on a remarque que plusieurs Geocacheurs avait laisse des cartes d’affaires dans les Geocaches.  On a tellement aime l’idee que quand on est arrive a Corner Brook on a decide de s’en faire imprimer. Les enfants ont decide ce qu’il y aurait sur les cartes et c’est ca que ca a donne.

2009-07-11
Il y avait une Geocache dans le coin de Port Saunders / Port au Choix qu’on n’avait pas fait la derniere fois qu’on etait la. C’etait une cache mystere de Parc Canada.  Pour la trouver il a fallu repondre a des questions. C’est la seule excuse qu’on avait besoin pour partir a l’aventure.  On est parti tot (Alain, Kim et moi, Vincent et Lucie etaient partis au travail), Port-au-Choix est a environ 2 heures de route d’ici. Pour obtenir la Geocache il a fallu aller dans le parc et repondre a des questions.  Les reponses etait sur les panneaux d’information. On a trouve les 5 reponses, pour les trouver on a du conduire a plusieurs endroits dans le parc, faire des sentiers et de la marche et bien sure, une promesse de creme glacee. Les enfants se sont bien amuses.

Sur le chemin du retour on a arrete dans un centre d’interpretation du saumon a Hawks Bay et on a eu la chance de voir des saumons nager dans la riviere a partir d’une fenetre sous l’eau.

2009-07-12
Les enfants sont restes a la maison, il avait besoin d’un peu de repos de mes vacances.  Je suis donc parti tout seul a la recherche de Geocaches. J’ai eu 2 autre FTF (premier a trouver) et j’en ai trouve 4 autres dans le coin de Pasadena.

2009-07-13
Encore du Geocaching, cette fois on est alle a Howleys et on en a trouve 2 autres juste avant la pluie.

Tout ca pour dire que le theme principal de mes vacances c’est le Geocaching, a defaut de faire du Kayak. J’ai ajouté une nouvelle page sur le Blog, “Geocache Stats”. Ca va vous donner une idee de mes statistiques personelles au sujet de mon passe-temps.

Aujourd’hui, je ne vais surement pas faire grand chose car Lucie est en conge.  Demain, c’est l’epicerie a Corner Brook, je suis pas mal sur que je vais trouver d’autres Geocaches sur le chemin.

More Geocaches / Encore des Geocaches

Before I talk about the main subject of this update I have to mention again Playing for Change. One of the reasons I want to mention that again is because this is what I have been listening non-stop for the past 2 weeks. I even got Alain hooked on it. Besides the music being that is really good, the main purpose of it is just awesome.

Playing for Change

Now on with the main subject of this update. As I mentioned in my previous blog, we all went to search for Geocaches in the area. These Geocaches were new and I never had a chance to check them out. So one evening off we went. The first one we did was just off the Rocky Harbour pond.

It was the hardest one. So basically I told the kids, we will do the hard one first and this will leave the easy one for dessert. The cache was in the middle of a hill. We encountered a little bit of complaints and arguing during the way up. To the point that I had to bribe them with the idea of getting ice cream when we were done. That worked to a certain point, we had less complaining but the expression on the faces said a lot. In the middle of the hill we had to get into the woods and walk a small distance. At this point we were just attacked by a pack of hungry mosquitoes and black flies. But after much hard work we did find the cache. We were all in a hurry to get out of there though as we were being eaten alive. Even taking a photo of everyone ended up being a challenge as most of the time someone had a hand in front of the face chasing these little critters away.

We then went to Norris Point and found the second Geocache without any problems or fuss. At the same time we also found a benchmark “geodesic survey mark” these are hard to find. So far since I started Geocaching, I have found only two.

On our way back we did a short stop in Wild Cove, a small fishing shed village and took a lot of photos.

Then we went back to Rocky Harbour to look for a mystery cache. In order to find this one you have to solve a puzzle. The kids solved the puzzle, no problem there, we got the new coordinates and went there, however we never found the cache. We searched for a little while but I suppose that the call of the ice cream was too hard to resist.

Again off we went, we stopped at the convenience store and bought ice cream for everyone, including me, to the satisfaction of the kids. We then ended up at the end of the wharf and watched the sunset. During the whole evening we took a lot of photos. So that was the happy ending of another Geocaching adventure.

Finally I am in the process of adding a new page to the blog called “My Gear” should be in by the next update.

Avant que je parle de mon sujet principal, je doit encore vous mentionner “playing for Change” Une des raisons pourquoi je veux encore en parler, c’est que c’est tout ce que j’ecoute depuis les deux dernieres semaines. J’ai meme introduit Alain a cette musique et lui aussi c’est tout ce qu’il ecoute depuis. En plus de la musique qui est exceptionelle, le but principal de Playing For Change est tout simplement impressionant.

Je cite le site: “Playing for Change” (je vais faire le mieux pour traduire) Playing for change et un mouvement multimedia qui a ete cree pour inspirer, connecter et emmener la paix dans le monde par la musique.

Encore une fois aller jeter in coup d’oeil sur le site ca vaut la peine. Allez voir les videos.

Playing for Change

Maintenant le sujet principal. Comme je l’ai mentionne dernierement. On est tous parti a la recherche de Geocaches. Comme il y avait de nouvelles Geocaches dans le coin on a decide d’aller les chercher. Un soir juste apres le souper on est parti. La premiere Geocache qu’on a fait etait juste a cote de l’etang de Rocky Harbour.

C’etait la plus difficile, j’avais dit aux enfants, on va faire la plus dure en premier comme ca on aura les plus faciles pour dessert. La Geocache etait au beau millieu d’une colline. On a du surmonter des plaintes et des gemissements tout au court de la montee. Au point que j’ai du a un moment les soudoyer avec une promesse de creme glacee a la fin du parcours. Ca a marche pour un certain temps, on a perdu les gemissements mais l’expression des visages en disait tout autant. Au plein millieu de la colline on a du entrer dans le bois pour une bonne marche. On s’est fait attaquer par les mouches noires et les moustiques. Mais apres beaucoup de travail et de perseverence, et bien sure une mention de creme glacee, on a fini par trouver la Geocache. On avait tous hate de sortir du bois, car on se faisait manger tout crus. Au point que meme prendre une photo a ete difficile parce qu’a tout les coups quelqu’un avait une main devant le visage pour chasser les moustiques.

Ensuite on a ete a Norris Point pour la deuxieme Geocache. On l’a trouver sans probleme. En meme temps on a meme trouve un point de reference “Marqueur de levees geodesique” Il sont rares a trouver. Depuis que je fait du Geocaching j’en ai trouve que deux.

Sur le chemin du retour on a arreter a Wild Cove, petit village de cabanes de pecheurs et on a pris tout plein de photos.

On est ensuite retourne a Rocky Harbour a la recherche d’une cache mystere. C’est le genre de cache ou l’on doit resoudre un puzzle pour avoir les coordonnees. Les enfants ont figure le puzzle sans probleme, une fois qu’on a eu les coordonnees on est donc parti a la recherche de la Geocache. Une fois rendue on ne l’a jamais trouve la Geocache. On a cherche pour un bout mais je crois que l’appel de la creme glace etait trop fort.

Donc on est parti, en chemin on a arreter au depanneur et j’ai achete de la creme glacee pour tout le monde, moi y compris, a la grande satisfaction des enfants. Ensuite on a ete au bout du quai et on a regarde le coucher du soleil. Bien sur durant toute la soiree on a pris des photos. C’est comme ca que notre aventure de geocaching s’est termine, en savourant de la creme glace.

Finalement je travaille a rajouter une nouvelle page a mon blog, qui devrait s’appeller mon equipement. Ca devrait etre pret pour la prochaine mise a jour.
