Yet another grey, cold, windy, miserable day. I did not venture outside for any amount of time, I just went out if it was really necessary. Like picking up the kids from school and going to the office to do some unexpected work (they called me in) it seems that even when I am off they just can’t live without me. After that I stayed home all comfy in the warmth.
I didn’t do much photography today, other than the fact that we had visitors to the bird feeders in the backyard. First time this winter, so I took a few shots from the window. One came out nice, it is like the bird is playing peekaboo.
I spent most of the day on the computer retouching photos. All the photos in my gallery are shown as they were taken. None of them were cropped or retouched. So I opened a new album with photos that I have edited in photoshop. I did a little bit of cropping, changed the contrast or saturation, played with the color and the mood and I was done. Just to make them more interesting and exactly how I want them.
Tomorrow we will be travelling to Corner Brook and who knows what we will see in our way. Talk to you tomorrow.
Malheureusement, c’était encore une autre journee grise, froide et venteuse. Je ne suis allé a l’exterieur que très brièvement et seulement en cas de nécessité. Comme pour aller chercher les enfants a l’ecole ou encore aller au bureau. (Ils m’ont appellé) meme dans mes journees de congé ils ne peuvent pas se passer de moi. Apres ca je suis demeuré a la maison, confortable et bien au chaud.
Je n’ai pas fait beaucoup de photographie aujourd’hui, autrement que pour le fait qu’on a eu des visiteurs dans la mangeoire dans la cour. Premiere fois cet hiver… J’ai fait quelques snap shot de la fenêtre. Une d’entre elle a bien sortie, un des oiseaux qui semble jouer à cache-cache avec moi.
J’ai passé la majorité de la journée sur mon ordinateur à retoucher des photos. Toutes les photos dans ma gallerie sont telles que sorties de mon appareil, aucune d’elle n’a ete retouchée ou recadrée. J’ai ouvert un nouvel album maintenant avec toutes les photos que j’ai édité dans le programme photoshop. Un peu de cadrage, changer le contraste et la saturation, jouer un peu avec les couleurs pour donner un peu plus d’ambiance aux photos. Ca les a rendu à mon avis un peu plus intéressantes et exactement comment je les ai voulais.
Demain nous allons à Corner Brook, qui sait ce que l’on verra en chemin? Donc a demain.

First order of business, I would like to thank the people who are leaving comments on my blog. This make it all worthwhile, knowing that there are people reading, it gives me the little extra motivation to keep on writing. When writing about things that happen in your daily life and everything else, sometimes you can’t help but wonder if you are not too boring for other people. Receiving comments tells you that you are still interesting. So again many thanks. While I am on the subject of comments, I am not sure if anybody has tried to leave comments on my photos in the gallery. You might have tried and it didn’t work. There is a catch, you need to fill all the captions: name, headline, comment and verification code. If one of them is not filled it won’t write the comments.
This morning I got up, got my coffee, it is a ritual see, no coffee no nothing. That is my rule. So after the first coffee, Lucie and I went for a drive. We were determined and on a mission! The mission was to see some wildlife. People must have thought: “These new people must be insane!” The weather was not that good. Cloudy, cold, -12c, high wind and blowing snow conditions. But like I said, we were on a mission and if we let the weather stop us, we’d be indoors most of the time . So we drove to Parson’s Pond, about an hour’s drive from here. We drove by the barrens and didn’t see anything, we were getting discouraged a little but just as we were arriving to the first community, St Pauls, we saw a small herd of Caribous. Lucie was happy and we both took several pictures.
When we arrived in Parson’s Pond we drove around and I took some more photos of boats and fishing shacks.
On the way back, once more we saw another group of Caribous. They were just by the road. Had we stopped on the other side of the road, we would have been able to touch them from the window, yes! That close! It is funny how the local population don’t even pay attention to them, I suppose they must be so used to seeing them. They don’t even slow down. Maybe this explains the number of wildlife/car accidents in the park. The only time they slow down is when there is a car parked on the side of the road. Not for the animals but for the car… Maybe by the time we get transferred from here we will be like them too, I doubt it though and hope not. For now, we are just as impressed as the first time we saw them.
As we were heading back, the weather turned nasty, blowing snow and poor visibility. I tried to take a few more pictures but the battery of the camera doesn’t seem to like the cold and let me down, it died on me. So we just headed back home.
Even in blizzard conditions the scenery around here is amazing. It has a whole different feel to it and still very interesting to see, so different than in the summer. Especially from the comfort and heat of the vehicle…
All this to say I have few new photos in my gallery, check in wildlife and winter albums.
Finally yesterday I was on a website about nature trails in Newfoundland. Most of the trails listed on the site are close to here. There are some really nice pictures on it, worth a visit at:

La premiere chose que je veux faire est remercier les visiteurs qui ont pris le temps de laisser des commentaires sur mon blog. Ça encourage à continuer de savoir qu’il y a des gens qui lisent. Ca me motive à continuer. Surtout que j’écrit au sujet de ce qui se passe chez nous, parfois je me demande si ce n’est pas un peu trop ennuyeux… Ces commentaires me montre qu’il y a encore de l’interet. Donc un gros merci encore pour tous les commentaires. En parlant de commentaires, je ne sais pas si quelqu’un a essayé de laisser des commentaires sur les photos dans ma galerie. Peut-etre que vous avez essayé et que ca n’a pas fonctionné. Il y a un attrappe…. Pour que le commentaire s’enregistre il faut ecrire quelque chose dans tous les champs: Le nom, le “headline” (titre), commentaire et le numero de verification. Si un des champs n’est pas rempli le message ne s’enregistre pas. Alors que le blog est installé de façcon àa ce que je dois approuver les commentaires avant qu’il n’apparaissent sur le blog, pour la galerie, ils apparaissent automatiquement, donc si vous ne voyez le commentaire que vous venez de poster dans la galerie, c’est qu’il n’a pas enregistré.
Ce matin je me suis levé, j’ai pris mon premier café… C’est un rituel, Pas de café le matin et y a rien qui se passe. C’est ma loi… Donc apres le premier café, Lucie et moi on est allé faire une promenade en voiture. On etait bien decidé et determiné, on avait une mission: voir des animaux! Le monde par ici doivent penser qu’ils sont fous ces nouveau voisins! La temperature etait pas vraiment belle, nuageux, froid, -12c, poudrerie et neige. Mais comme j’ai dit on avait une mission et puis si on laissait la température nous décourager, on serait à l’intérieur presque tout le temps. Donc on a conduit jusqu’a Parson’s Pond, a peu pres une heure de route d’ici. Comme on conduisait sur le bord des plaines on etait un peu decouragé de n’avoir rien vu encore. Mais juste comme on allait entrer dans la communaute de St Paul’s on a appercu un petit troupeau de caribous. Lucie etait tres contente et on a pris plusieurs photos.
Quand on est arrivé a Parson’s Pond on a fait un tour dans le village ou j’ai pris plusieurs photos de bateaux et de cabanes de pecheurs.
Sur le chemin du retour on a vu d’autres caribous, cette fois ci ils etaient juste au bord de la route, si on avait arreté de l’autre coté de la route on aurait pu les toucher juste en ouvrant la fenetre. Bien oui si proche que ca! C’est drole comment les gens par ici ne portent meme pas attention aux animaux. J’imagine qu’ils sont habitué a les voir, ils ne ralentissent meme pas. Ca explique peut-etre un peu le nombre d’accidents de voiture avec les orignaux et les caribous dans le parc. Le seul temps qu’ils rallentissent c’est quand il y a une voiture stationné sur le coté de la route et ceci pour la voiture, pas pour les animaux. Peut-etre que d’ici a ce qu’on soit transferré ailleurs, on sera nous aussi comme eux, mais j’en doute et j’espère que non. Pour le moment, ca m’epate toujours autant.
Durant le trajet du retour, la temperature a empiré et c’etait presqu’une tempete. Poudrerie, et la visibilité etait presque nulle par endroit. J’ai essayé de prendre d’autres photos mais mon appareil ne semble pas aimer le froid et m’a laissé tomber. La batterie etait morte. Alors on est retourné à la maison. Meme dans une tempete de neige le paysage ici est toujours fantastique. Ca prend une nouvelle apparance durant une tempete, c’est comme un tout nouveau paysage, tellement different de l’été. Surtout dans le confort et la chaleur de la voiture…
Tout ceci pour dire j’ai de nouvelles photos dans ma galerie, dans les album winter et wildlife.
Finalement hier alors que j’etais sur l’internet a faire des recherches sur les sentiers de Terre-Neuve j’ai trouvé un site interessant. La majorité des sentiers expliqués sur le site sont au près d’ici. Il y a vraiment de belles photos et ca vaut la peine d’aller voir a:

Work work work! Snow, snow, snow! Or is it the other way around? It doesn’t matter really, that is the only thing that has happened the last few days. Since January 25th my last entry on the blog, it has been snowing non stop. Blizzard, snowstorm, high wind, all the nice stuff… At work as well it has not stopped. We had a stolen atm machine, a shed fire with an atv and ski doo in the shed, some motor vehicle accidents and a lot of travelling all over the detachment area in all that snow. I had to do some interviews with the media about all that. The good thing is I did not get stuck once. Wow must be a record. These are the main reasons why I did not write anything on my blog lately.
I saw a few animals, namely caribous but was too busy to stop and take pictures. I am off for the next 3 days so I am planning to take it easy. Maybe take Lucie on a little ride and take a few pictures. We will have to go to Corner Brook during those 3 days to do grocery. So definitely some travel in the future. We might get lucky and see some wildlife.
The last few days I made some purchases on e-bay. I bought Lucie some filters for her cameras, she will be able to do some macro photography. I bought myself a holder for my gps to put in the car so I will never get lost again… That won’t stop me getting stuck. And I am still waiting for the map software for my gps.
I am getting a cold… Funny… I was fine the last 7 days while working and now that I have 3 days off I am getting a cold, how lucky is this?
In the meantime I am visiting websites about kayaking and geocaching and dreaming of nicer days.
Travail, travail, travail! Neige, neige, neige! Ou est-ce que c’est le contraire. En tout cas c’est pas vraiment important car c’est la seule chose qui soit arrivé dernièrement. Depuis le 25 janvier, il n’a pas arreté de neiger. On a tout eu, poudrerie, blizzard, neige, vent, bref, tout les mauvais temps. Coté travail ca a ete pas mal la meme chose. On a eu un vol the ATM, un feu dans un hangar qui a detruit un skidoo et un tout-terrain, quelques accidents de voiture et ben sure tous les voyages d’un bout a l’autre du detachement dans toute cette neige. J’ai du faire quelques entrevues avec les medias au sujet de tout cela. Ce qui est bien, c’est que je ne suis meme pas resté pris dans la neige une seule fois. Ca doit etre un record. Donc voilà! Ce sont les raisons pour laquelle je nen’ai pas ecrit dans mon blog ces dernier jours.
J’ai vu quelques animaux, surtout des caribous mais j’etais trop pressé pour pouvoir arreter et prendre des photos. Je suis en congé pour les 3 prochaines journees et je ne prevois pas faire grand chose. Peut-etre aller faire une promenade en voiture avec Lucie et prendre des photos. On doit aller a Corner Brook et faire la commande. Faque il y a des voyages dans le future. On va peut-etre etre chanceux et voir de la faune.
Les dernier jours j’ai fait quelque achats sur e-bay. On a acheté des filtres pour l’appareil photo de Lucie, elle va pouvoir faire de la macro photographie. Je me suis acheté un support pour mon GPS pour dans l’auto. Comme ca je ne vais plus avoir de raison de me perdre. Cela ne vas pas m’empecher de rester pris… Et j’attend toujours le logiciel de cartes pour mon gps.
Je commence a avoir le rhume. C’est drole comment pour les 7 derniers jours ou je travaillais j’etais en forme et que maintenant que je commence 3 jours de congé je commence a etre malade. Ca c’est chanceux!
En attendant je visite des sites internet sur le kayak et le geocaching et je reve de jours ensolleillés.

Crisis? what crisis? That is the title of a song by Supertramp. But it was also the mood of the family last night. As I mentionned we had a snowstorm, for that matter it is still snowing right now. Last night the wind and the snow were blowing hard. A real storm with all that comes with it. It was better being inside then outside, the only people who were enjoying it were the people with snowmobiles and the ones that were working (like me). I was keeping a watchful eye on my driveway that was filling up by the minute.
The wind was blowing so hard that the basement door swung open. That’s all it took for Loki to experience freedom. He decided to get out and look around at all that snow. Not being used to being out by himself, he got lost… So that is when the crisis began. You heard of searching a needle in a haystack, that is nothing… Try searching for a little white dog in the middle of a snowstorm, at night. That is a challenge. Everyone took part in the search effort, even the RCMP and the neighbor. It took about 2.5 hrs but we found him. Actually someone else found him and called the RCMP wondering if someone had lost their dog. It is nice to have connection isn’t it?
He was found by a gentleman who lives next door to Vincent’s girlfriend. I wonder if it is a coincidence or if he tracked a smell… We will never know. Everyone was cold, tired, exhausted but happy to have found the little bugger. Thinking that he almost changed owner. It is amazing how you get attached to these little critters even if sometimes they are more trouble than anything else, just the same it would be hard to be without them.
This morning the children did not go to school as the driveway was a war zone and there was no way to give them a ride to school. I got up fairly early, for a guy working nightshift, got a quick coffee and went outside with Lucie to do some shoveling. Unknown to her I had set up the camera in the bedroom on a time lapse setting. One picture every 30 seconds for a total of 100 pictures. The end result is quite fun and amusing. So now all is fine, Loki has recovered from his experience nicely, doesn’t seem like it bothered him that much.
Lucie and I are recovering from shoveling not so nicely, getting old… But the driveway is clear and I can go to work, i don’t have any excuses now.
Une Crise ? quelle crise ? (crisis, what crisis) c’est le titre d’une chanson de Supertramp. Mais aussi c’etait l’humeur de toute la famille hier soir. Comme j’ai mentionné hier on etait en plein millieu d’une tempete de neige d’ailleurs il neige encore en ce moment. Hier soir il y avait du vent et beaucoup de poudrerie et tout ce qui vient avec une tempete de neige. C’etait mieux etre en dedans que dehors. Les seules gens assez fous pour etre dehors etaient ceux qui ont des skidoos and ceux qui devaient travailler (comme moi). De temps en temps je jetais un oeil sur mon allée de garage qui se remplissait a vue d’oeil.
Le vent soufflait si fort que la porte du sous-sol s’est ouverte. C’est tout ce que ca as pris à Loki pour vouloir avoir un p’tit gout de liberté. Il a decidé de sortir et de voir pour lui meme c’etait quoi une tempete de neige. Comme il n’est pas habitué d’être dehors tout seul et pas attaché, il s’est perdu. C’est a ce moment la que la crise a debuté. Chercher une aiguille dans une botte de foin, c’est rien ca. Essayez de trouver un petit chien blanc au millieu d’ une tempete de neige, le soir quand il fait noir. Ca c’est du défi! Tout le monde a participé à l’effort de recherche, la GRC et meme le voisin. Ca nous a pris pres de 2.5 hrs pour le retrouver. C’est quelqu’un qui as appellé la GRC en disant qu’il avait trouvé un petit chien blanc et se demandait si quelqu’un avait perdu son chien. C’est beau d’avoir des connections, n’est-ce pas?
Il a ete trouvé par le voisin de la blonde a Vincent. Je me demande si c’est une coincidence ou bien si il a senti quelque chose… On ne le saura jamais. Tout le monde etait gelé et etait epuisé, mais bien content de l’avoir retrouvé. Penser qu’il a presque changé de proprietaire. C’est pas trop long qu’on s’attache a ces petites creatures-là meme si la des fois ils font plus de degats qu’autre chose. On s’apercoit vite qu’on ne pourrait pas se passer d’eux.
Ce matin les enfants ne sont pas allés a l’ecole. L’allée de garage avait l’air d’une zone de guerre. On ne pouvait pas sortir l’auto et leur donner un lift a l’ecole et il faisait trop mauvais pour marcher. Je me suis levé assez tot pour un gars qui a travaillé de nuit. Apres mon premier café, qui as ete rapide pas mal, je suis sorti et ai donné un coup de main a Lucie avec le deneigeage. Lucie ne le savais pas mais j’avais installé mon appareil photo dans la chambre et je l’ai arrangé pour faire de la photo en temps continu. Une photo a chaque 30 secondes pour un total de 100 photos. Le resultat final est pas mal amusant. Ca vaut la peine de regarder, le nouveau video est situe dans la page Temp Continue
Enfin, tout est revenu a la normal. Loki a récupéré rapidement de son experience, ca ne semble pas l’avoir affecté tant que ca…
Moi et Lucie on est en train de recuperer de notre experience de pelletage, pas aussi rapidement… On s’en vient pas mal vieux… Mais l’allée de garage est propre et maintenant je n’ai plus d’excuse pour ne pas aller travailler.

The photo gallery is up and running and I must say it looks good. Thanks to Lucie who set it all up for me.
We are bracing up for a major snowstorm, they are forecasting 25 to 30 cm of snow today and tomorrow. It’s ok, at least this time I’m working during the bad weather. Unfortunately this also means there will be shovelling in the near future. The kids are all happy and are hoping that there won’t be any school tomorrow. Doesn’t matter they still have to do their homeworks.
One of the things that I have found hard over the years is to get a good picture of Spock, my 12 year old black Labrador. First of all he is scared of cameras for some reason and will run away from us as soon as he sees one. The other thing is that his eyes usually come out funny when you finally get one. Yesterday Lucie caught him by surprise while he was sleeping. So at least I have one good picture of him now.
On the other side, Loki is completely the opposite. He will run to us when he sees the camera and takes a pose.
As for the cat Chocolate, I won’t talk about him…

Ma galerie de photos est finalement prête et elle est pas pire pantoute. Un gros merci a Lucie qui me l’a toute arrangée.
On se prepare presentement pour une tempete de neige. Ils prevoient entre 25 et 30 centimetres… C’est ok, pour une fois il fait mauvais quand je travaille. Parcontre, il va y avoir du pelletage à faire tres bientot. Les enfants sont contents et ils esperent qu’il ny aura pas d’ecole demain. Peu importe ils vont quand meme faire leurs devoirs ce soir.
Une des choses que je me suis apercu ces dernieres annees c’est qu’il est tres difficile de faire une bonne photo de Spock, mon Labrador noir de 12 ans. Il a peur de la camera, à chaque fois qu’il la voit il se depeche d’aller plus loin et quand finalement on arrive à le prendre en photo, ses yeux ont toujours l’air étrange. Hier, finalement Lucie l’a surpris pendant qu’il dormait. Alors j’ai maintenant une bonne photo de lui.
Avec Loki c’est completement le contraire. Il vient nous voir quand il voit la camera et prend la pose.
Quant au au chat, Chocolat, je n’en parle pas de lui.
De nouveau sur le blog même sinon pour l’album photo, j’ai ajouté quelques citations et quelques nouveaux liens internet. Aussi j’ai des nouveaux boutons si vous voulez faire un lien vers mon blog sur votre propre site.

Nothing really new since the other day, I spend most of my day Sunday working on the computer. I updated my photo album database. We couldn’t find a good photo album addon to the software I am using for the blog. So basically with the help of Lucie we just installed an independant photo album. This is a similar idea as for the blog when I switched, it gives me more control and easy access to it without as many restrictions as with Webshot. So I spent most of my day uploading photos into it. I opened a new page on the blog that will link directly to the photo album. I still need to do some changes to the presentation as I want the same feel but in the meantime you will still be able to have a look at all the photos. As previously stated be patient with me I am still learning all that.
I also did some test with time lapse photography, I opened a new page for that as well and you can see the first test. It is not much but at least give you an idea. Everything is explained on the page.
And today it was back to work… And as it had to be, it was a really nice day. Sometimes I wonder why it is always terrible weather wise when I am off and always nice when I am working… oh well.
I had a training session today in relation to the FAST program (Family And School Together). I did this program in Carbonear for 5 years and I thought that I was kind of clear of it, however they tracked me down, so here I am starting this again in Rocky Harbour. The program is aimed at helping families with high risk children to get help and support in the community. It is a really good program and I saw some excellent results in the past. Rien de nouveau vraiment depuis la derniere fois. J’ai passé la majorité de la journee dimanche a travailler sur l’ordinateur. J’ai mis a jour mon album photo. Comme je n’ai pas reussi a trouver un bon programme pour incorporer des albums de photo directement sur le blog. J’ai decidé de m’installer un album à part. Avec l’aide de Lucie on a installé un album independant du blog. Un peu pour la même raison que j’ai changé le blog. Ca me donne un acces plus facile, plus de choix et moins de restrictions que sur Webshot. Donc j’ai passé la journee a y placer les photos. J’ai cree une nouvelle page qui va vous diriger directement sur l’album de photo. J’ai encore quelques changements a faire car je veux que l’album ressemble au blog, mais au moins en attendant vous allez quand meme etre capable de jeter un coup d’oeil. Comme j’ai dit avant, vous allez devoir etre patient avec moi, car je suis encore entrain d’apprendre tout ca.
J’ai aussi ouvert une nouvelle page pour la photo en temps continu. C’est pas grand chose encore, c’est juste un test mais au moins ca va vous donner un idee de ce que c’est. Tout est expliqué sur la page.
Aujourd’hui c’etait le retour au travail… et comme prevue il faisait beau aujourdhui. Je me demande des fois pourquoi quand je suis en congé il fait tout le temps mauvais et quand je travaille il fait beau. Et bien coup donc…
J’ai passé la journee a suivre un session d’entrainement pour le programme FAST (Famille Et Ecole Ensemble). J’ai fait ce programme a Carbonear pendant 5 ans. Je pensais que maintenant j’etais comme clair et que j’en avais fini avec ce programme, mais ils m’ont retrouvé et maintenant on va le commencer a Rocky Harbour. Le programme FAST est pour aider les familles d’enfants a risque à obtenir de l’aide et du support de la communaute. C’est un bon programme et j’ai vu quelques excellents resultats dans le passé.
